WALK THROUGH THE DOOR of Clear Light, The Cedar Company in Placitas and you know you've arrived. The scent of cedar rests lightly about the visitor's area where art and cedar-scented products commingle with thriving greenery and expanses of light. What is it this small company does that draws so many loyal customers? Owner Joshua Peine (pronounced "pine") had no idea the little gifts of freshly cut cedar he gave to friends would develop into a fulltime business. Twenty-some-odd years ago, he exited the Hollywood scene, came to New Mexico on his motorcycle, began trading with the Navajos and Hopis and learned about the therapeutic power of cedar. As he gave gifts of cedar needles, he began to create a demand, and eventually developed what is now the essence of his business: cedar sachets, incense and potpourri, as well as cedar-scented lotions, shampoos, mists and other wonderfully scented products. |

The cedar is carefully harvested and bottled or packaged in its own unique container. One favorite item is hand-made cedar and pinon incense that is carefully arranged in a circular container that includes a small burning dish. A final touch of green cedar needles is sprinkled over the top of the arrangement before the container is sealed for shipment. Incense packages range from $6 to $15, depending on size.
